KGAL ESPF 4 Fund Invests in Wind Farm

KGAL signs a purchase agreement for a Swedish wind project that is ready to build. - KGAL has signed an agreement with Swedish project developer Eolus for the construction of Bäckhammar Wind Farm. Bäckhammar will be acquired for the KGAL ESPF 4 renewable energy fund, which invests mainly in wind, solar and hydroelectric power in Europe.

Eolus will construct Bäckhammar Wind Farm in the province of Värmland, central Sweden and will be responsible for the long-term technical management of the farm. With construction due to start this year and grid connection scheduled for mid 2020, it will have an installed capacity of around 130 MW. It is planned to sell the majority of the annual electricity production to a large offtaker via a long-term power supply agreement. “The site’s geographical proximity to industry makes Bäckhammar an excellent location,” explains Alexander Rietz, KGAL ESPF4 Portfolio Manager, going on to add that Sweden is one of the most attractive growth markets for onshore wind in Europe. Bäckhammar is the fifth wind farm that KGAL has acquired in Sweden, strengthening the independent investment and asset manager’s market position and expanding total capacity in the onshore wind segment in Europe to 780 MW.

The KGAL ESPF 4 renewable energy fund has collected more than €380 million of equity by April 2018. “Investor interest is high. We are planning to reach the hard cap of €600 million by year-end 2018,” notes Tim Van den Brande, Sales Director, KGAL Capital GmbH & Co. KG. The fund estimates investments of more than €1 billion, but even this figure may be significantly exceeded as a result of co-investments from existing investors. Kempen Capital Management uses this opportunity and has taken a co-investment stake in the Bäckhammer project.
