KGAL ESPF 6 Fund and PtX Development expand Lubmin hydrogen platform with majority stake in Lhyfe`s project
KGAL ESPF 6 Fund and PtX Development are further strengthening their joint green hydrogen platform in Lubmin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Through the acquisition of a majority stake in Lhyfe’s green hydrogen project, the partners are expanding the Lubmin platform to a potential hydrogen production capacity of up to 1,700 megawatts. At full capacity, the total Lubmin project could achieve an annual hydrogen output of up to 160,000 tonnes, making it potentially the largest hydrogen project in Germany.
The Lubmin site offers secured land, confirmed grid access and a strategically outstanding location adjacent to GASCADE’s “Flow” pipeline – an existing, repurposed hydrogen pipeline that already connects Lubmin with Saxony-Anhalt and forms a core element of Germany’s hydrogen backbone network.
The platform benefits from Lubmin’s unique positioning, enabling direct links between large-scale renewable power generation, hydrogen transport infrastructure and Germany’s key industrial demand centres. In its final build-out, the hydrogen core network will link Lubmin to major industrial clusters, creating a strong foundation for long-term offtake relationships.
"Lubmin is one of the most ambitious green hydrogen projects in Germany," says Thomas Engelmann, Head of Energy Transition at KGAL. "The location brings together all the critical elements needed for large-scale hydrogen production – renewable energy, grid infrastructure and direct access to the hydrogen core network. This makes Lubmin a cornerstone project for Germany’s hydrogen economy."
Approaching the next development phase
Following the acquisition, KGAL ESPF 6 Fund and PtX Development together with Lhyfe will jointly advance the project into its next development phase. The focus will be on further technical and commercial development, engaging with potential hydrogen offtakers and preparing the project for implementation. Lhyfe will retain a minority stake in the project and continue to bring in its experience and expertise in green hydrogen development and scale up.
The partnership combines KGAL’s long-standing experience as an infrastructure and energy investor with PtX Development’s deep expertise in hydrogen and Power-to-X project development, further supported by Lhyfe’s contribution to the development and maturation of the project. Together, the partners aim to develop the Lubmin project into a flagship for Germany’s green hydrogen transition.
Background: The Lubmin Hydrogen Project
The Lubmin hydrogen project is located at the site of a former nuclear power plant on Germany’s Baltic Sea coast. The location has secured land, access to large volumes of offshore wind energy, a connection to the extra-high-voltage power grid and direct links to the German hydrogen core network. In its final expansion stage, the project is designed to reach gigawatt-scale electrolysis capacity and supply green hydrogen to industrial customers across Germany.
