A passion for aviation

We have actively offered investment solutions in the aviation segment since 1979. Today, we rank among the 50 largest asset managers worldwide for aircraft. Our two long-term joint ventures with Lufthansa – GOAL and Lufthansa Leasing – laid the foundations for us to offer our investors around the world attractive solutions with profiles ranging from core to opportunistic. We are now a sought-after partner for aircraft investments in the USA through our joint venture GOAL and can leverage our global presence to our investors’ advantage. In addition, we directly manage all leasing arrangements with airlines.

Investment strategy

In the aviation asset class, we offer investors attractive investment solutions in aircraft leasing, with asset options tailored to their risk preferences. For more than 40 years, we’ve enjoyed direct access to strong airline partners and a modern fleet of aircraft, which has ultimately benefited our investors. Drawing on this long-standing expertise, we cover the entire aircraft leasing value chain in house: from deal initiation to finance and transaction structuring, and from active technical and commercial asset and portfolio management through to commercial exploitation. This means that, acting on behalf of our investors, we can tap the entire range of investment opportunities the aviation asset class has to offer. Given the minimal correlation between aircraft leasing and many other asset classes, investing in aviation can have a positive portfolio effect.

Two long-term joint ventures with Lufthansa

In 1989, we partnered with Deutsche Lufthansa AG to launch our first joint venture, which remains successful to date. Lufthansa Leasing structures financing solutions for Lufthansa Group aircraft. It primarily implements cross-border leasing structures – an area in which the team has extensive expertise. The joint venture has realised over 500 aircraft transactions to date for Lufthansa Group airlines with a total value of €18 billion.

Since its foundation in 1998, GOAL has executed transactions for more than 400 aircraft and engines. As a result, this joint venture with Lufthansa is one of the largest operating lessors in Germany and ranks among the top 50 lessors worldwide. By drawing on GOAL’s asset expertise, marketing knowledge and global network, KGAL serves investors through successful aircraft investments based on sound, well-established concepts.

Aviation and ESG

Sustainability is an increasingly important consideration in the aviation industry, for airlines and investors alike. Investments in aviation-related products are not excluded from the EU taxonomy. With our solutions focused on the use modern, fuel-efficient aircraft and sustainable fuels, we are actively contributing to creating a more environmentally friendly aviation industry. For example, we’re involved in the production of hydrogen-based e-kerosene in Vordingborg, Denmark. Together with our partner Arcadia, we are on course to produce around 68,000 tonnes of synthetic aviation fuel (eSAF) on the site per year from green hydrogen. That’s enough for an A320 to make 1,500 flights between Munich and London.
